Tour Report

63 Students and 11 Staff members had the great adventure at Wayanad where jungle meets country. They all stayed at Haritagiri at Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala from 26.10.2008 to 30.10.2008.

The green paradise is nestled among the mountains of western ghat and is located at a distance of 76 km from the nearest sea-shore of Kozhikode. The hills, rocks and valleys which give shape to the very unique terrain of Wayanad provide for exceptional adventure experiences. Wayanad is a land of species- Almost every crop such as coffee, black-pepper, ginger, turmeric, cocoa, arecanut, tea, rubber, vanilla etc are grown here. Black pepper produced from this hill station is famous in the world of spices because of its unique quality and aroma.

Day I – Visisted Soochipara Waterfalls: It is really a treasure of nature, yet to be discovered. The stretches of waterfalls ranging at places 100 to 300 feet height are a treat to the eyes. The pool below provides for water rafting, swimming, bathing etc. The tree top huts at Soochipara give an unique view of the valleys of the Western Ghats and the glimmering shallow waters of the surrounding springs.

Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary: It is rich in bio-diversity, flora and fauna. It has been declared a project elephant site. Also jungle cats, panthers, civet cat, monkeys, wild dogs, deers, spotted bears, bisons, gaurs, cheetah, wild bears, peacock, owls, jungle fowls, woodpeckers, babblers, cukoos etc.. can be seen there.

Day II - Temple, Pookot lake, Edakkal caves.

Pookot lake: It is a perennial fresh water lake, brimmed with ever green mountains. The weather here is salacious; the scenic beauty, hypnotizing and the nature, unspoiled. There is an aquarium and a green house here. Boating facilities are also available. Spices and handicraft items are also arranged for sale at Pookot.

Edakkal Caves: An interesting trek up took us to the fascinating Neolithic cave site of Edakkal. Etchings found on the walls of these caves have drawn the serious attention of archaeologists and historians worldwide. It is assumed that the Edakkal caves had been inhabited at various stages in history.

Tour ended with grand camp fire in the hotel site organized by the students. WE are eagerly waiting for such memorable trips in future.
